Moscow - Irkutsk - Olkhon - Ust-Barguzin - Ulan-Ude

Adventure yourself in a wild trip, crossing the frozen Baikal, the deepest Lake in the world by foot! Accompanied by a group you will begin a unique adventure, walking on the ice from one coast to another, and sleeping in tents in the middle of Baikal.

Across your journey you will discover the charm of the Trans-Siberian railway, meet with locals, enjoy traditional Russian games, have some drinks at the restaurant car and take some time to stare at the landscape from Moscow to Siberia, Europe to Asia. 

You will then arrive in Irkoutsk, "the Paris of Siberia", and later Ulan-Ude, the capital of Buryatia and high place of Russian Buddhism. 

Programme

Day 1

Поехали !

Meet with your guide and teacher at the Yaroslav train station in the afternoon.

 

Settle into the sleeper wagon, enjoy a Russian toast to celebrate the beginning of the adventure,

 

Overnight in the train.

Day 2 - 4

The charm of Trans-Siberian

Train Moscow - Irkutsk

You will spend the whole 3 days in the traditional and very comfortable Russian train, enjoying famous Russian samovar while watching the wild Russian landscapes through the windows.

The Russian train is also a very pleasant to spend time reading, playing chess or card games (such as "Durak" or "Mafia"...). A little bit of vodka with smoked fish are also available for those who wish.

Provodnitsa

Each carriage is managed by a key figure, in most cases a woman, called "provodnitsa".  

She is responsible for maintaining the order on the train, checking tickets and passports, and handing out bed sheets, and she is also the person that wakes you up 30 minutes before you need to get off the train.

Day 5

Irkutsk

Arrival in Irkutsk in the morning

 

City tour

Upon your arrival in Irkutsk, you will be met by your local guide who will take you for a sightseeing tour of this mythical city.

 

Once called the “Paris of Siberia”, Irkutsk is one of the main historical and cultural center of Siberia. You will walk through the city center and have a look at the main monuments of Irkutsk: the Church of the Saviour, the Church of the Epiphany, various old typical wooden houses, and the Angara Quay with the monument of the Tsar Alexander III who launched the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway.

Irkutsk Decembrists Museum

After the Lunch, you will visit the Museum of Decembrists where you will get acquainted with the history and life of exiled nobles, visit the famous "130th quarter" – a unique area of recreated merchant mansions and traditional Siberian architecture.

Olkhon island

Day 6

Transfer to Olkhon Island (6 hours)

Olkhon is an island in the middle of the splendid Lake Baikal. Departure on a bus from Irkutsk and arrival at the port of Olkhon. From there, you will cross the "Little Sea" (the strait that separates the island from the mainland) by 4x4. Arrival in Skahurta.

Khuzhir & the "Shaman Rock"

Transfer to Khuzhir, the main village of Olkhon. Enjoy the beautiful nature in and around the village, discovering the famous Bourkhan Rock: the highest place of Shamanic culture in Siberia. 3 km further you will come across the "Sarayskiy Bay", an excellent sandy beach,

First steps on Baikal Lake

Day 7

Starting point - Cape Khoboy

Transfer by off-road vehicle (UAZ) to the starting point of our crossing - cape Khoboy situated in the north of the island. From there you will discover a magnificent panorama of the frozen lake. Stops along the way to explore the caves, grottoes and islands.

 

Beginning of the crossing

Heading towards the eastern shore, we will pass through the widest and the deepest part of Lake Baikal. During these two days every participant will pull his personal clothes in special sleds. *7h30 min of trekking with sled (25 km)

 

Lunch on the open air

 

Baikal Base Camp

Accommodation in a real camp on the Baikal ice situated in the geographic centre of the lake on the boundary between the Irkutsk region and the Republic of Buryatia. Then, we will have a ritual and greeting where every participant of the group can try to bore the ice. In the camp there will be the comfortable and warm boots - Russian valenky, put them on, here some briefing and relax!

 

Dinner (Hot meals, cooked on gas burner).

After the long journey, there is nothing more relaxing then the tradionnal Russian banya (bathhouse).and the herbal tea.

Day 8

Free day on the ice

Free day in the ice

You will have a day at leisure on the Baikal ice. For those who prefer the active rest, we suggest to go skating or to walk near the camp. The transparent ice, the ice-hummocks and breaks will allow you to make thousand of photos. If you are keen of photos, we suggest you to wake up earlier and make photos of the Baikal ice in the morning sunshine. For those who prefer to rest, there is an Ice bar. The purest ice is everywhere - around you and even in your glass.

For the most sportive participants of the group we propose to play ice hockey!

Eastern coast of Lake Baikal

Day 9

Continuation of the ice-trekking*

Today we continue our journey to the eastern coast of the Lake Baikal. This coast is flatter and behind it there are the Barguzin and Khamar-Daban mountains. Normally there are more snow there compare to the western coast.

*7h30 min of trekking with sled (25 km)

Check-in and Russian banya

Arrival and check-in in the guest house. After several days of physical activity it is the perfect time to take a traditional Russian banya!

Day 10

Ulan-Ude

Transfer Ust-Barguzin - Ulan-Ude

This journey will take from the shore of the Lake to the Taiga forest to discover a whole new environment.

Arrival in Ulan-Ude, capital of Buriatya

Buryatia is a region of the Russian Far East, populated by Buryat-Mongols. Its capital, Ulan-Ude, is home to Russian Orthodox Odigitrievsky Cathedral and a giant Lenin's head sculpture.

 

Visit of the Ivolginsky datsan

Ivolginsky datsan is a place serving the most important place of worship in Buryatia and the centre of Buddhism in Russia, located in a beautiful steppe.

Booking & Cancellation

1. Regular services

A deposit of 30% (thirty percent) will be required to confirm your order of any Service. Another part of the payment (70% (seventy percent)) shall be paid 1 (one) month before the start of provision of any of the Services.

Terms of Cancellation

If cancellation of the ordered Services or any of the ordered Services occurs:

1) more than 30 (thirty) days before the start of provision of the Services, then the cancellation fee is €100 (one hundred euros) per person. If any of the applicable fees and/or charges (including, but not limited to banking, payment systems’, etc.) are higher than €100 (one hundred euros) per person, then the necessary amount is paid by a customer,

2) between 30 (thirty) days and 7 (seven) days before the start of provision of the Services – 30% (thirty percent) of the total price of the Services,

3) in less than 7 (seven) days before the start of provision of the Services, the cancellation fee is 100% (one hundred percent) of the total price for the Services.

2. Premium Services

A deposit of 50% (fifty percent) will be required to confirm your order of any Service. Another part of the payment (50% (fifty percent) shall be paid 1 (one) month before the start of provision of any of the Services.
